It is intriguing that this writer claims that it was european colonisation that "forced out" the aboriginal, maori and native american peoples from their idyllic lifestyles.
This is, in fact, almost entirely incorrect.
The colonists themselves did much to try and combine cultures.
It was the capitalist traders that really screwed up the North American situation.
The aboriginal peoples were destroyed by traders from South-East Asis and Middle Europe that pillaged northern australia before the colonists went close to arnhem land.
The Maori people were saved by british colonists, in that the securing of a long-standing treaty that engaged all tribes and those who would freely colonise New Zealand prevented invasion (iminent) by the Dutch and French colonists, who would have really made a mess of things.

So, dont cry for these natives. Their failure to accept the changes that were imposed on them (rightly or wrongly, considering what was de rigeur 2, 3 and 400 years ago) caused their own problems.

Immigration has been a real fact since monkeys traversed the Oldivai gorge. LIve with it.
Conquer or die.

The government of Norway constantly laments having to put up with this settlement, but in their last referendum, the people expressed their democratic choice to keep paying through the nose for abiding by regulations decided by other people, reflecting other interests in the complete absence of their own government.

europe is a brilliant thing. Im british and patriotic but the times when the uk was a superpower has gone and we need to unite with europe in order to create a power to rival the usa and future powers such as china. Many people who a sceptic towards europe like to take all the good the eu gives us and doesnt want to give anything back, just near where i live (not in a big city or huge town) there is a sign saying where a road and a new forest has been made funded by the eu. Also europe gives us money, it helps to create regeneration in urban areas (liverpool 08). The problem with british culture is that we are scared of change we are slow and dont like to gamble on things, and having gordan brown as the prime minister isnt helping, we need a prime minister who will make changes quickly. you can see how cautious he is with his decisions (stopping the construction of the supercasino)

we need to wake up and smell the coffee, we are changing and we can either try and stop it or take advantage of it, and become powerful and prosperous or become a country without a voice!!!

Great post, but I would disagree that people can spot hypocrisy and demand action on terrorism and the economy. The only demand that people are seen to be doing something, even if it does nothing. This fits in entirely why people dont mind that Cameron has his car follow him on his bicycle. Imprisoning people for six weeks without trial will not stop terrorism, it might even encourage it, and yet people support it because it looks tough. Similarly with the economy, people are impressed with the strong pound, simply it seems because if something is strong, it must be good. Never mind that British industry has been all but obliterated by the persistently high level of the pound and by staying out of the EMU.

This is an excellent post, and is along the lines I have long been arguing

To Geoffrey I would say this. By all means continue to lecture, but don't consider lecturing to be political action. Environmentalism is overly infected with lifestylism way out of proportion to the good that it does.

We don't respond to problems with crime, health or education with demands that we should all volunteer to help out more in the police stations, hospitals and schools.

Lifestylism was understandable when next to nobody was interested in political action. But it was a kind of giving up. We should give up the giving up.

Maybe people do not like being lectured. The popularity of Jeremy Clarkson proves how easy it is to be popular and speak out against being Green.
But is the answer to stop? Let people continue to be wasteful and destroy the planet?
If you have a better alternative to "lecturing", then tell us what it is. As far as I am aware, the only alternative is to do nothing.
Maybe it is human nature that we will destroy ourselves. If that is what you think, then say so.
The reality is that the EU, the US, China and India contribute to 70% of global warming.
The energy intesive lifestyles we lead today are simply not sustainable. If we are not going to change the way we live - and maybe we won't - then we will suffer the terrible consequences.

Established business isn't in favour of free markets in their own business. They want special treatment to increase their profits at the public's expense.

In this case its all part of a cosy deal between the Labour Party, Unions and the bank to try and shore up Labour's NE hegemony.

I am impressed by your outing of Cameron as a foreign policy ignoramus, but I don't think his lack of knowledge, however basic, should overshadow the very important point he made about the need to re-contain Russia -even if he didn't know it at the time.

What makes the Kosovo issue so important now isn't just the necessity of preventing the outbreak of war on the EU border again, but also the impending standoff with Russia who will do their best to obstruct any peaceful settlement unless independence for Kosovo is taken off the table.

The last thing Europe can afford is to be dependent on Russia for the security of its borders as well as already being dependent on them for the security of its energy supplies. Unless the EU and not just the US are prepared to put their money -and their military if need be- where their mouth is, that is exactly what will happen.

Senor Lou Dobbs is correct we do have broken borders

Senor Lou Dobbs,

I have been going over the ships manifest. I have looked at the NINA,
PINA and Santa Maria's manifests. I do not see a Dobbs surname anywhere
on any lists. I do see Rodriguez, Ramirez, Martinez and Vazquez surnames.
I have even personally interviewed all my sailors.

I would like to know how you were able to sneak into this land.
I claimed this land for the King and Queen of Spain.
I sir consider you an illegal alien. You do not have a right to be in
this country. Please vacate these premises immediately.

Sincerely,

Cristobal Colon

Protector of the crown,
